Overview

This programme has been fine-tuned to create a structured business education that launches you into a successful career in business. You will gain a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of finance, marketing (including digital media and social media marketing), management, creative problem solving and information technology. During the first year, students will study common modules, as they progress into second year they will be offered a choice of specialisms (choose 1):

  • Marketing
  • Accounting
  • Management

Studying at MTU Kerry Campus means exposure to a rich culture of entrepreneurship, giving you access to a range of highly successful businesses at the on-site Kerry Technology Park. The international reach of the department is seen in the network of over 100 partner institutions across the EU, Canada, China and further afield, giving our students the option of studying abroad during the programme.

 

Work placement is an integral element of the course and takes place in year three. The duration of work placement can vary from 12 weeks to 8 months with placements based locally, nationally and internationally. This provides students with valuable industry experience and in many cases results in graduate employment opportunities.

What will I study?

First Year at a Glance

  • Introduction to Management: offers students an introduction to business management ideas and concepts
  • Principles of Accounting: gives students an ability to understand the fundamental concepts of recording financial information and the preparation of final accounts
  • Foundations of Marketing: provides students with their first introduction to the subject of marketing. The value of this important business practice is explained throughout this course
  • Communication: promotes both verbal and written effective communication in an academic and professional context
  • Microeconomics: introduces students to the effects of actions of consumers and firms on the economy
  • Behavioural Science: gives students an appreciation for the rationale behind a variety of human resource management concepts

Modules

What is a Module?

A module is a standalone unit of learning and assessment and is completed within one semester. A full-time student will normally study six modules in each semester; part-time and ACCS (Accumulation of Credits and Certification of Subjects) students will have flexibility as to the number of modules taken.

Entry Requirements

Entry 2024

For admission to a programme, standard applicants must

  • score the necessary CAO points and
  • meet the minimum entry requirements

Leaving Certificate in six subjects i.e. H5 in two subjects and O6/H7 in four other subjects. The six subjects must include Mathematics O6/H7 and either English or Irish grade O6/H7.
