The President of the Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT), Dr. Oliver Murphy and Sr. Consilio, founder of Cuan Mhuire extend to you a warm invitation to the 2018 Forum on Addiction, in the company of leading EU (EMCDDA) and Irish (Department of Health) policy makers and Voluntary ('Safetynet Primary Care') Agencies.

The Forum provides an important opportunity at the start of 2018 for leaders in Civic Society to reflect on recent developments and interventions in Addiction in contemporary Ireland: in our families, schools and communities. It brings together high-level EU and Irish experts working directly in the field of addiction, homelessness and social distress. The Forum is very much designed to provide an informal and welcoming atmosphere to update our guests on the greatest social challenge facing Ireland today.

Keynote Speakers

The Forum is an Initiative of ITT/ Galilee House of Studies/Cuan Mhuire with its new leading-edge Hons Degree Programme in Addiction Counselling. It will feature presentations from Europe (EMCDDA) and Ireland (Department of Health and the Voluntary sector (Safety Net Primary Care).

Marcia Ferri

The European Monitoring Center for Drug and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) exists to provide the EU and its Member States with a factual overview of European drug problems and a solid evidence base to support the drugs debate. It offers policymakers the data they need for drawing up informed drug laws and strategies. It helps professionals and practitioners working in the field pinpoint best practice and new areas of research. Ms. Marcia Ferri from the EMCDDA will provide an overview of EU trends in Drug misuse, developments in national policies, and new interventions based on “Best Practice".

Dr. Austin O’Carroll

'Safetynet Primary  Care', an innovative new voluntary service provider, was founded in 2007 by award-winning GP Dr Austin O'Carroll as a network for health professionals and organisations working to improve health care access for homeless people.

Its core activities include health care service provision, using a shared electronic patient records platform. Safetynet employs GPs, nurses and support workers to provide services, including mobile resources, to homeless people and vulnerable groups continues to identify gaps in health services and facilitate the development of new services. Safetynet Primary Care is at the cutting edge of “Street Medicine" is part funded by the HSE as well asreceiving voluntary donations. Its founder Dr. Carroll will talk to the Forum about the current issues and challenges in this field and their day-to-day work.

Susan Scally 

The Department of Health is responsible for the formulation and oversight of policy on Healthcare, including policies on Drug and Alcohol misuse. It liaises with statutory and voluntary agencies and service providers working in the field of addiction and related areas. Ms. Susan Scally is Principal Officer with responsibility for the Drug Policy Unit and coordinated the preparation of Ireland’s new Five Year Strategy published in 2017.

Sr. Consilio

VOLUNTARY SECTOR Voluntary service providers deliver an indispensable set of supports to individuals, families and communities impacted by addiction and its effects, including homelessness.

Cuan Mhuire is Ireland’s largest multi campus provider of Detox and Residential Rehabilitative Care. In 2016 Cuan Mhuire celebrated its 50th Anniversary since its foundation by Sr. Consilio. It provides a wide range of internationally accredited Tier 4 services, across the Island of Ireland. Its main centres, in Athy, Farnanes (Cork), Bruree (Limerick) Coolarne (Galway) and Newry are supported by Transition/ Step- down Facilities. Michael Guerin is an Addiction Counsellor in Bruree. His Presentation will focus on " Developments in Detox & Rehabilitation over the last 15 years: What's changed and what's needed".
