Course Description

Acute medicine as a speciality has developed rapidly over the last number of years both nationally and internationally. It is defined as part of general (internal) medicine concerned with the immediate and early specialist management of adult patients who present as urgencies or emergencies. Given the acuity of patients who present to Acute Medical Units it is recognised that there is a need to develop additional clinical expertise in acute medicine nurses.

This Level 8 Special Purpose Award in Acute Medicine Nursing is co-delivered by a consortium of Institutes of Technology/Technology Universities and aims to enable acute medicine nurses to develop their knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acutely ill adults.

 

Entry Requirements

Registered General Nurses currently employed in Acute Medicine Unit, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, Medical Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Short Stay Unit, Medical Ward (speciality or general– excluding rehabilitation / stroke / critical or high dependency) or Local Injury Unit for the duration of the programme.

Interested Nurses will be required to provide evidence of:

  • Approval from the applicant’s line manager (ADoN or DON) to participate in the course.
  • Confirmation that the applicant will be employed in an AMU (or Acute Medicine Unit, Acute Medical Assessment Unit, Medical Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Short Stay Unit, Medical Ward, Emergency Departments or Local Injury Unit, as appropriate) for the duration of the programme
  • Confirmation that a suitably qualified clinical practice supervisor is available to assess and support the applicant for the duration of the course
  • Copy of current NMBI registration

 

Course Delivery

The course will be delivered over 12 weeks using a blended learning approach. Courses will start in September each year. The next course commences in September with induction taking place at the Munster Technological University.

  • Holistic patient assessment and clinical decision making
  • Acute and chronic renal failure
  • Type 1 and 2 diabetes
  • Acute and chronic pain management
  • Psychological impact of illness
  • Cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological and gastrointestinal systems
  • Fluid and electrolyte management
  • Older person presenting with delirium & dementia
  • Tissue viability
  • Stress management and future development needs

 

Duration

The course will be delivered over 12 weeks by blended learning. Nurses will be required to attend the college on 1 day per fortnight, for 6 days in total, with online work undertaken between college days. A primary focus of the day in college will be skills development underpinned by the evidence based associated theory.

 

Cost

Fees are €1,300 plus a €95 capitation fee.

Registered nurses and midwives directly employed either on a permanent or on a temporary basis (for three consecutive months) by the HSE are eligible to apply for funding support. Please see the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director website and follow the links.

 

Progression Opportunities

On successful completion of the programme you will have gained 10 credits at NFQ level 8 and will have the requisite knowledge and clinical skills to undertake further postgraduate studies in acute medicine nursing.

 

Career Options

The aim of the Certificate in Acute Medicine Nursing is to enable Nurses working in Acute Medical Units to develop their knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of acutely ill adults supporting career development within this specialist area.
