The Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons) is a four year course designed to give a clearly structured business education that provides a solid foundation for a successful career in business.
You will gain a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of finance, marketing (including digital media and social marketing), management, creative problem solving and information technology. You will spend a full semester in year three on work experience, either in Ireland or abroad. This allows you to see your academic learning in action, and significantly boosts your employability at the end of the course.
During the first year students will study common modules, as they progress into second, third and fourth year (Hons Degree only) they will be offered a choice of specialisms.
Specialisms (choose 1)
Students can spend a full semester in year three on work experience either in Ireland or alternatively on international work placement. As well as international opportunities for study and work experience, students will have the benefit of working on live industry projects, employer links for mentoring, case studies, projects and internships.
Our degrees are accredited by relevant professional bodies. For example, if you complete a Level 8 Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Accounting at MTU, you will gain maximum exemptions for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) professional accounting qualification. If you complete the Level 8 Bachelor of Business (Honours) in Marketing, you are eligible to sit the Marketing Institute of Ireland (MII) Qualified Marketer examination.
For a price of just €30, MTU Marketing students can sit the Marketing Institute’s Qualified Marketer exam. Those who pass will be registered onto the Qualified Marketers Register and will also be enrolled as members for free for the first year, to help kick-start their career through The Marketing Institute.
There are 5 key reasons to study business at MTU:
With the broad range of subjects studied during the course, career opportunities are very varied. Past graduates have gone into accountancy, financial services, sales and marketing, public relations, event management, information systems management, teaching and a wide variety of management functions in the private and public sectors.
Professional body exemptions in marketing and finance set graduates on the road to full professional qualification. Graduating students wishing to pursue further qualifications can proceed to post-graduate courses up to PhD level.
Some student comments on their work placement experience:
"My work placement has definitely affected my career aspirations. I now know for certain the type of organisation and career that I’d like to follow"
"I discovered that the skills I’ve learnt on placement will benefit me hugely when I’m finished college and applying for jobs after graduation"
"Work placement has helped me to develop my problem solving skills. I had to use my own initiative and prove that I was capable of figuring out a solution myself. I think this is a skill which will be useful when I return to complete my final year in college"
And some employer comments on their experience with our students:
"Mark will be a great accountant. He was very eager to learn every aspect of the job and go the extra mile with all the assignments that we set out for him. He had a great understanding of the technicalities of accounting and his enthusiasm was unwavering. We hope to continue the work relationship with MTU and look forward to engaging with the Department of Business in future years"
"We are delighted with Mary and she has excelled beyond our expectations. We have given her projects that we would not normally distribute to the students on placement. This has happened because of her ability to manage complex work tasks and show a commitment and willingness to work diligently and with enthusiasm throughout the placement. We have also decided to offer her an extended contract"
"Robert was a great asset to our marketing team here. He contributed greatly to the team’s output. Robert was great to apply common sense and a very practical approach to all work he under took. He managed creative agency and other third party suppliers very well to ensure timelines were met and quality work was delivered. Working relations with colleagues and suppliers is integral to getting work completed and outputs delivered, Robert excelled in working with people and this is a skill that will stand to him in his career."
"Why did you both choose this course?
Catriona: We both enjoyed Business as a subject in school and personally, I felt it would give me a number of future career options through the broad range of modules. The choice of three different streams i.e. accounting, marketing or management with specialisation in one area for the final years of the course, gives students a chance to experience elements of all areas before making a choice based on performance and experience in the first two years.
What attracted you to MTU?
Nuala: It is a local College close to home. Some of our friends and cousins have been past students and all had positive stories. On open day the staff and student buddies were very friendly and helpful.”
