The Bachelor of Science Honours in Computing with Software Development (4 Year Abinitio) course is designed to give you the skill and competence design and build applications used by business and consumers. Their primary focus is on developing your ability to use computer languages.

Modules include Introduction to Programming, Object Oriented Programming 1, 2, 3 & 4, Algorithms, Software Engineering, Object Oriented Analysis and Design. We cover Computer Architecture and Operating Systems, and we explore networking and how computers interconnect. We look at databases, mathematics, logic and software development, together with a range of additional modules, all of which address cutting edge ICT issues.

All students go on a work placement in semester 6, usually January to May of the third year. This provides invaluable experience and connects students to possible future employers and colleagues. A high proportion of our students get full time posts with their placement employers after graduating.

All of our students spend a full semester, or equivalent, on work placement in third year. In fourth year, our honours degree students study a variety of modules at a more advanced level. These include programming, software development, networks and project management. You also complete a final year project which draws on all you have learned throughout the course.

The computing department at Tralee has a dedicated staff, and the staff student ratios ensure that our staff know and interact individually with all our students. We encourage interaction with the staff and with peers, as we see this as being essential to learning.

Computing and ICT continue to be sectors of the Irish and world economies that display strong growth despite the downturn that has affected most other sectors. Technology enterprises are looking for graduates with a combination of skills. The areas most in demand are the core computing areas of programming and software skills as graduates with these tend to be most versatile and adaptable. Graduates of the Institute’s BSc (Hons) in Computing with Software Development course may find work in roles such as:

• Programmer/software developer in technology enterprises and areas where ICT is heavily used such as  finance services, education and health care;
• Developer of digital media and audio/video content;
• Network technician and administrator;
• Database administrator;
• Web developer and web manager;
• Many are also self-employed in the ICT area.
