This degree, originally entitled Health and Leisure with Massage, provides the knowledge, skills and competences to begin a career as a professional in health, fitness, sport and leisure sectors, with massage therapy as a significant supporting skillset. In additional to massage-related modules, the programme consists of many of the same subject areas as the Health Sport and Exercise Sciences programmes, Exercise Science, Health Science, Activity Leadership, Physical Education, Inclusive Sport and Physical Activity, Work Placement, Research Methods and supporting subject areas.
Massage-related modules include a range of practical massage therapy treatment and casework elements, therapeutic client relationship and screening and applied anatomy and functional assessment.
This degree programme involves vigorous physical activity, eligible candidates will need medical clearance. Garda vetting is also mandatory.
For nearly 30 years, the Department of Health and Leisure Studies in MTU has offered degree programmes related to exercise and health sciences, fitness for health, inclusive / adapted physical activity with an emphasis on inclusivity, adaptation, holistic and authenticity.
The Department of Health and Leisure Studies is characterised by its progressive, innovative and approachable academic and support staff, its vibrant and engaging students and the valued contribution it makes to campus life.
The programme emphasises community engagement, relevant massage practice, wellness education and the importance of a broad skill set. As you progress, you can expect to become confident in your professional skills, your life skills and in communicating the theoretical basis for concepts in health and exercise sciences. Graduates will have a bachelor of science degree and should also be eligible for massage therapist accreditation (IMTA), professional fitness instructor registration in group exercise, gym instruction and personal training.
On graduation, you will be a health and fitness professional, a wellness educator with a specialist knowledge and practice in massage therapy. You will be equipped to work in a variety of settings, including health and leisure centres, health promotion, spa/ wellness centres, hotels, mainstream and special-needs schools, community centres, clinical settings, workplaces and in the private/entrepreneurial area being competent to specialise in hands on relaxation and clinical massage techniques, fitness instruction and personal training. . Graduates can take up employment opportunities in the areas of coaching, sports massage, health and wellbeing promotion, in the area of physical education with young and older adult groups and in adapted physical activity education.
Suitably qualified Level 7 graduates are eligible to progress to year 4 (final year) of the Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Health and Exercise Sciences with Massage Therapy.
