The Institute runs two elective modules for students who engage regularly as volunteers within their community, to obtain Institute accreditation for their engagement. There is a very strong ethos of civic engagement within the Institute and it believes that students should be enabled to gain academic recognition for time spent assisting the work of community organisations.
The Community Service Initiative (CSI) is a module available to 2nd yr students in semester 4.
WHAT DOES THE MODULE INVOLVE? |

Students take 2 lectures a week and one tutorial, and are expected to volunteer for a time span of 3 months. Theoretical elements involve learning how to become a 'civic servant', understanding the community and voluntary sector and gaining appreciation of active citizenship and social capital enhancement. Tutorials include small group discussion on pertinent volunteer engagement issues, and personal development exercises. |

The Community Leadership Initiative (CLI) is a module available to 3rd yr students in semester 5.
What does the module involve? |

The theoretical elements involve examining theories of leadership, its role in communities, active citizenship and social capital development. Tutorials include small group discussion on pertinent volunteer engagement issues and leadership capacity building exercises. |

President's Civic Spirit Award:
All students who submit their work will be awarded an ITT President's Civic Spirit citation.
A gold, silver and bronze award will be bestowed on 3 candidates displaying outstanding volunteering experience and impact as adjudged by the award selection panel.
