Student Charter

Introduction and Purpose
The purpose of the Student Charter is to provide a clear statement of the ways in which staff and students can work together to enhance and support the learning and research experience at the Institute while fostering an enjoyable and appropriate environment in which to work and study.

The Institute of Technology, Tralee (ITT) is committed to providing a high quality learning and teaching experience for all of our students and staff. This Charter describes the nature of the environment the Institute seeks to foster, and the students’ role in maintaining the environment. The quality of the services, that we believe you are entitled to, are balanced with responsibilities placed on you. The Student Charter is an evolving document and as such is subject to review and change. This charter is not intended to create legal rights that do not already exist and shall not give rise to any claims.

Teaching & Learning Environment
The Institute is committed to ensuring high standards in its teaching, research and development work, in the calibre of staff, the quality of facilities and services assigned to these activities.

This environment will provide:

• Appropriate information in relation to the structure, content and expected outcomes of the course or research activity
• A learning and research environment which is supportive, challenging and rewards scholarship and dedication
• Appropriate communication structures among students, staff and management
• A quality curriculum based on best practice and research, varied and stimulating teaching and learning methodologies, fostering of responsible and independent thinking that will assist students and graduates in their career and personal lives
• A clear statement of the criteria to be used to assess, reward or discipline students in pursuit of their academic programmes and in their relationships with management, staff, fellow students, agents of the Institute and the wider local community
• Specific supports to enable students with disabilities, learning difficulties or extenuating personal circumstances to meet the academic and personal demands of the courses or research activity
• Access to facilities, services and resources sufficient for the pursuit and achievement of the educational and personal goals in the Institute

Supporting Environment
The Institute respects each student individually and acknowledges the academic aspirations and post graduation goals of the student as well as the importance of the personal well-being of each individual.

The provision and continuous development of the Institute’s Support Services recognises the needs of students be they of a sports, social, health, spiritual, mental health, personal, disability, career or other nature that can significantly impact on the quality of life for the student.

The Institute is committed to supporting each student through the Support Services provided and students can expect to be supported by the Institute.

The Institute can expect that students who are in need of support will present themselves to the Support Services and make their needs known.

Respectful Environment
The Institute fosters a Respectful Environment where all individuals and groups are treated equally and respectfully regardless of gender, religion, community background, nationality, race/ethnic origin, and disability, marital status, care of dependants, sexual orientation or age.

Students are expected to behave in a responsible manner on and off campus, and to ensure that their actions do not have an adverse impact on the Institutes reputation, its environment, our neighbours, the local community or those who work or study at the Institute.

The Institute encourages students to pursue their academic studies in a diligent, honest and professional manner. Students are encouraged to ask for clarification from their lecturers if they feel it is needed. The Institute welcomes your views once shared honestly and constructively. Active participation in your studies and in Institute life is promoted.

Clarity, honesty and open communication between staff and students is central to the Respectful Environment.

Campus Environment
The Institute strives to provide a campus environment suitable to the needs of its students. Computer labs and resource rooms offer PCs with network access, student e-mail, internet access and relevant course-based software as appropriate.

In addition to the physical resources (i.e. buildings, library, computer labs, lecture theatres and resource rooms) there are counselling, health, chaplaincy, catering and sport facilities, as well as a Student Union and Careers Offices available on campus.

It is expected that all property throughout the Campus will be treated with care and respect and all guidelines adhered to where appropriate.

Health & Safety guidelines should be adhered to at all times when on Campus.
