Course Description

The Certificate in Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care is a 10 credit, level 9 special purpose award involving a single module (Principles of Inflammatory Bowel Disease Care) delivered over one semester (12 weeks) using an online approach. The aim of the programme is to provide the core knowledge and skills required to safely, professionally and holistically care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The programme is designed to be inclusive of diverse healthcare professionals involved in the provision of care and treatment of individuals with IBD. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) has approved this specialist programme as a continued education course.

The programme is delivered online to facilitate interested nurses and allied healthcare professionals living nationally and internationally to engage in this unique and specialist programme. The programme is structured in a manner that will allow practitioners to engage in continued professional development at their own pace and that is flexible around their work schedule. Students will engage in directed study material including recorded lectures and webinars facilitated by multidisciplinary team experts in IBD across Ireland, including Gastroenterologists, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists and Dieticians.

The programme involves predominantly asynchronous (recorded), directed and independent study. There are also elements of synchronous (live) delivery in the form of workshops. Learners are expected to attend four live, three hours sessions on weeks 1, 4, 8 and 12 and these workshops will focus on the assimilation and application of knowledge from the asynchronous, directed and independent study undertaken prior to the workshop.
