The new honours degree course includes both technical and management skills and builds on the existing and very successful level 7 Civil and Environmental Engineering course. In developing the course, we have been very careful to maintain the correct balance between theory & practical skills, to emphasise team working & professionalism and to incorporate industry standard information technology. Graduates should be creative problem solvers who can help to shape the future.
During the first three years of the course there are a broad range of modules in topics such as environmental engineering (water resources, waste management and coastal protection), structural engineering (analysis, design & computer detailing) and infrastructural development (transport and roads). The aim is to provide a good technical knowledge with fundamental engineering principles. Practical skills are developed in land surveying, drawing and the use of software. However civil engineers need more than just technical skills, and the professional, ethical, social, legal and financial aspects of engineering are explored, as well as opportunities to gain research and communication skills.
A twelve-week work placement is a central feature of the programme in Year 3. It’s while on placement that you really see the value of your academic learning in a real-life working, environment. Your placement lays the foundations of your career path and significantly boosts your employability at the end of the course. It’s all about developing skills, gaining knowledge and cultivating the attitude needed to build a thriving career.
Students have the option to graduate after year three with a level 7 qualification.
The emphasis in year 4 is to ensure that graduates are able to work effectively as a professional engineer and are ready to enter the workplace. This is achieved by providing a comprehensive simulated design office experience where students working in teams plan, design & prepare drawings for a real life engineering project from the concept phase to the construction. This takes places during both semesters and involves on-site surveying as well as project management. This is supported by a range of modules including advanced civil engineering design & software, health & safety, energy and communication.
MTU has excellent engineering laboratories for testing structures, soils, fluids and materials. We maintain a comprehensive range of civil, structural and environmental engineering software while the online library gives access to the standards, regulations and legislation needed to facilitate problem solving.
